McCormick Ranch

McCormick Ranch: For outdoor enthusiasts, Canyon Lake is a great place to explore. The lake serves as a reservoir for nearby Salt River and is located about 16 miles outside of Apache Junction on state route 88. Beautiful mountainous scenery can be viewed from the recreational area. Swimming is also allowed in designated areas and boating ramps are available for use as well. Fishermen will be pleased to find a variety of fish such as the walleye, largemouth bass, yellow bass, rainbow trout, bluegill, channel catfish and crappie. There are a total of three recreation sites at the lake – Acacia Picnic Site, the Palo Verde Recreation Site and the Boulder Creek Recreation Site.

Lost Dutchman State Park located at the base of the Superstition Mountains is popular for, “Its creosote-scented, saguaro-spotted Sonoran Desert beauty.” Offering over 290-acres of getaway adventure, the park is rumored to hide a miner’s gold strike. The Lost Dutchman Mine has tempted gold diggers from far and wide. The mine is said to have shifted into obscurity by way of an earthquake. The legend is still celebrated today with Annual Lost Dutchman Days. Recreational options that may be explored throughout the park include daytime nature hikes, moonlight hikes offered from October through April on full moon nights, camping in the Superstition Wilderness and picnicking with tables and grills at each campsite.
